Procedure for Yellow Fever Inoculation Near Airport

Procedure for Yellow Fever Inoculation Near Airport as on July 2012

Address and location:
Ground Floor, Airport Health Organization Building

Behind Ambassador Flight Kitchen[Flying Chef]
Opposite Hyatt Hotel,
At the Signal of Airport approach Road.
[the website says Ambassador Hotel but they mean Flight Kitchen. There’s no new Ambassador Hotel near the airport]

Timings:
Registration: 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. Monday to Friday. Closed on all Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

Inoculation: 12 Noon to 01.00 p.m. [1300h] [one o’clock in the afternoon]

Things to take with you.
1. Valid passport
2. Valid E-tkt, of the next few days, in the name of the PP holder
3. INR 300/-
4. Pen [ blue or black, non-blotting, non-smudging type]
5. bottle of water
6. hand sanitizer.

Procedure:
1. The premises gate opens only at 8.30 a.m. So get there at 8.30. a.m.

2. Queue up outside the bldg.
3. At 9.00 a.m. they will check the passports and E-TKTs. Upto this point, someone else can queue up for the person requiring the inoculation. From this point onwards only the valid passport & ticket holders are allowed.

4. After this check all must still remain in queue outside the bldg.
5. at around 09.50 a.m. the doors to the bldg will be opened and everyone is asked to proceed inside and sit according to the queue. [ At this time or slightly earlier there may be a period of slight commotion when suddenly a small crowd will walk into the line. Hold your patience. This is because each person is allowed to stand in line for a family of three. So if your number in the line was, say, 15, you may suddenly find that you are now no.22 or 23.]

6. Now the registration begins. One must proceed to the counter and produce passport and E-TKT. The clerk will note your name, pp no. and ETKT reservation no. and note your number in the queue on the E-TKT. This is the “Token” number.
7. At noon the staff will direct everyone upstairs.

8. Blank Yellow Fever Cards will be issued to everyone wherein your personal details are to be filled in.
9. Now fees of INR300/- are collected.[ passport & fee receipt are to be surrendered to the clerk at the counter. Yes you have paid the fees and both PP and fee receipt are to rest with the clerk. For a period of about 15 mins “trust” is called upon].
10. People are sent into the inner room in groups of five and the Yellow Fever Vaccination is inoculated.
11. While you are getting inoculated, the Health officer is signing your Yellow Fever Card. So you may have to wait a few mins after your shot to collect signed YFC, fee receipt and passport.
12. Please check that you have received your own YFC duly signed and correct in all respects, own passport and fee receipt in your own name.
13. At the earliest possible time laminate the YFC so that it may be preserved for the next ten years.

NOTES:
1. Why is there a time gap between registration and inoculation? This is because the vaccine is available in powder form and must be prepared just before inoculation and consumed in less than one hour. Therefore depending upon the no. of people registered, [ subject to max 70(seventy) ], the dose is prepared.
2. The entire process takes so long, are toilets provided? Yes clean toilets are provided and one is readily directed towards them even at 8.30. a.m. No soap is provided therefore carry and use hand sanitizer.
3. Light refreshments and hot & cold beverages are available for purchase.
4. What happens if one reaches in time but one’s turn is after seventy people? Will they register your name that day and then ask you to come directly for inoculation the next day? NO. One has to go back and return the next day to register afresh. So get there in time. Its one day for the next ten years, so no big deal.
5. Why only seventy people? Why not more than 70, say, 100 or 200? This is policy matter of the Union Ministry of Health. Until recently it was 40 per day which has now been raised to 70. There’s rush only during the holiday season. Other days its only about 40~45 per day.
6. Yelling, Shouting and cursing the system will not get you anywhere. No registration before 10 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Its one day for the next ten years so get there in time.

7. Is there a way to bribe the staff and get an inoculation? I don’t know. I have not explored that possibility. Its one day for the next ten years so get there in time.
8. For seafarers, does one need to surrender existing YFC? No. I did not ask and they did not ask. So just on Passport and E-TKT I received the vaccination. Be sure to enter Passport Number in the field “Travel Document”.
